Keeping a well-stocked kitchen is crucial in staying on track with healthy eating. Our schedules don’t always allow for fresh, organic meals on a daily basis. But it is absolutely still possible to eat healthy in a time crunch – and keeping foods conveniently on hand at all times will help you tremendously.

 

To name a few – stock your kitchen with frozen veggies, canned beans, nuts and seeds, healthy condiments and seasonings to grab at a moments notice. Organic is always best, when possible.

 

Here are 4 of my favorite staples to keep on hand at all times…

 

  1. Coconut Oil — with its anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-fungal properties and the healthy fats it provides – this is definitely one of my favorite staples to keep on hand. Not only can it be used in the kitchen, but you can also use it on your skin as a natural moisturizer, and in your smoothies for a kick of natural energy.

 

  1. Liquid Aminos — Bragg’s Liquid Aminos is your healthy alternative to soy sauce. Jam packed with amino acids, made with non-GMO soybeans, and it is also gluten-free. Coconut aminos are also a great staple to keep around. Coconut aminos are also packed with amino acids, and slightly sweet — a great alternative to teriyaki sauce.

 

  1. Spirulina- is a freshwater plant that’s grown across the globe, from Africa to Hawaii, and is renowned for its remarkable nutritional profile. Top 5 Reasons Your Body Loves a Detox

 

There are a million reasons to detox – and probably a million different ways to go about it. But, what must one look for, what’s the best way?

I’ve seen from my years in practice that to be completely effective, a detox program needs to contain the following key components:

  • some fiber to scrub the gut, bind toxins and promote their elimination
  • anti-microbial herbs to kill bad bugs in the gut and maintain healthy flora
  • targeted nutrients to boost the liver and prevent the accumulation of toxins
  • digestive enzymes to help the body break down food and assist digestion
  • a balanced blend of vitamins & minerals to safely support you during detox
  • a dietary plan that eliminates problem foods, but doesn’t leave you feeling hungry

An effective detox must not only address the toxins we eat, drink, breath and put on our bodies every day – but just as important – it MUST contain the specific ingredients needed to neutralize or eliminate the internal toxins the body creates as it performs it’s normal everyday functions.

Without these targeted nutrients to clear out the bodies own biochemical and cellular waste, your body won’t be getting the cleanse it really needs.

The toxins and chemicals of modern industrial life assault our bodies every day. Our systems are constantly neutralizing and eliminating them, but the problem is, over time, this exposure overwhelms the detox organs, (primarily the liver and the gut). So, instead of getting eliminated, toxins wind up being stored in various tissues, bodily functions start to slow then falter, setting the stage for the development of chronic diseases.

A periodic detox will keep your engine humming and help you to maintain good health in the long-term.

Although the primary goal of a good detox is to reset and optimize detox function, the side effects are wonderful too – most people will experience:

?Clo's 5 Winter Rituals for a Strong Immune System ?

For the past 7 years  I have been able to enjoy the winters healthy, strong and energized. This is no fluke… I do not live in a bubble! I have children, have a very active business life and  am around all kinds of  sneezing, coughing and germs.  I work with clients daily, many of whom are sick, putting me at higher risk than your average person.

My body remains resilient because I follow these 5 steps below. No over the counter crap required. Lots of Vitamin L though….❤️

  1. Clarissa’s Immune Boosting Smoothie for breakfast. Smoothie in the winter? YES! The kids love it too. We need something  quick, filling, tasty, nourishing, and full of the energy we all need to get through a busy morning.                                   *BLENDER:  coconut milk, water, coconut oil, baby greens, frozen organic blueberries, warming cinnamon and YOUR favorite plant based protein powder and a dash of Vitamin L.
  2. 5 Minute Morning Meditation: Meditation is always a work in progress for me, and honestly these days at home it’s about 5 minutes in the morning. I can’t always hit my favorite class or weekend workshop so that 5 minutes minutes daily is vital. I am still able to access the sense of calm and clarity that comes from my longer practice. It’s a SUPER  stress and anxiety buster, but we all know the research shows it ups our immune function too. BONUS
  3. Supplement with Vitamin D: In the summer, you can find our family down East in the Jacksonville/Swansboro area. We are all   beach nuts and honestly do a lot of direct sun without sunscreen, so I seasonally opt out of supplementing with vitamin d since I’m getting from it’s natural source: the sun. BUT, when fall hits I begin to incorporate it into my supplement routine – I take a dosage that is fit for what my blood work levels show, per my doctor Dr. Beck.  Vitamin D is known to  boost immunity and MOOD  so it really helps me feel healthy and happy all winter long.
  4. Herbal Adaptogens.  Herbs such as andrographis, chamomile, elderberry, and ashwagandha  help my body adapt to stress. If my body is well adapted to stress than I can better handle and fight off infection and bacteria that come my way.  I have  calming ritual pr-bedtime. This calming ritual grounds me at the end of the day and soothes my system to ease into a restful sleep. I make  a nice cup of chamomile. Chamomile has been used for centuries by herbalists as a gentle yet effective remedy to ease the nervous system, incdentely coconut oil with magnesium rubbed on my legs helps also. My herbal ally coupled with my Yoga Nidra CD has been an  effective as a sleep aid for me. It is imperative that I sleep well so that I am at optimal immune function.
  5. Sweet zzzz’s: Getting a solid 7-8 hours of sleep a night is essential for me to feel my best, and I try to hit the rack by 10pm . If I wait until after 11pm I get a second cortisol surge. THIS IS NO bueno for me. I just get super wired and tired at the same time and it SUCKS– The quality of my sleep is super important and getting started at 10pm helps me avoid interrupted sleep patterns and agitation.  Quality sleep not only helps increase my immune function  but it’s also an important time for my body to detox and restore… something I am wild about.

Epsom salts have been used by many different cultures for hundreds of years. They have a number of different beneficial properties and are used in gardening, household cleaning and detoxifying the body. These salts are very inexpensive and can be purchased at bulk discounts in garden centers nearly everywhere. Using Epsom salt baths is an advanced detoxification strategy that has remarkable health benefits.

Epsom salts are named for a bitter saline spring located at Epsom in Surrey, England. Epsom is different than traditional salts in that it is actually a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. These minerals have very powerful health benefits that can enhance the detoxification capabilities of the body.

Magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin and into the body’s blood stream. The skin is a highly porous membrane that both takes in minerals and eliminates toxins every day. Using a powerful mineral base such as Epsom salts in a bathwater medium creates a process called reverse osmosis. This process pulls salt and harmful toxins out of the body and allows the magnesium and sulfates to enter into the body.

Magnesium plays a critical role in over 325 enzymes, helps to improve muscle and nerve function, reduces inflammation and improves blood flow and oxygenation throughout the body. Sulfates are necessary building blocks for healthy joints, skin and nervous tissue. Epsom salts replenish the body’s magnesium levels and sulfates. This combination helps to flush toxins from the body and helps build key protein molecules in the brain tissue and joints.

How to Detox Bath

 

 

How to take an Epsom salt bath:

The first step is to schedule yourself at least 40 minutes, as you need about 20 minutes to remove the toxins, and for the second 20 minutes, the body absorbs the minerals in the bath water.
Fill up your bath with warm water. Be sure to have a water filtration system in your house, as you don’t want to bathe in tap water that has toxic chlorine, fluoride, dioxins and heavy metals. Add in the Epsom salts in the following amounts:

Children under 60 lbs: Add 1/2 cup of salts to a standard size bath
Individuals between 60-100 lbs: Add 1 cup of salts to a standard size bath
Individuals between 100-150 lbs: Add 1 1/2 cup of salts to a standard size bath
Individuals between 150-200 lbs: Add 2 cups of salts to a standard size bath
For every 50lbs larger – add in an additional 1/2 cup of salts.

Additional strategies to apply with an Epsom salt bath

 

  • Epsom Salts or Bath Salts like Celtic or Himalayan Sea Salt – wonderful for drawing toxins out of the body and establishing proper pH—Epsom salts can even raise magnesium levels in the body! Use 1 to 2 cups per bath—the more you use, the more powerful the effect.

 

 

  • Baking soda – Soothes the skin, alkalizes the body and is a natural antifungal. Use 1/2 to 2 cups per bath (a great adjunct to Epsom salts).

 

 

  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Neutralizes body pH and invigorates and softens the skin (note: be cautious when combining baking soda and apple cider vinegar—you may wish to do one or the other). Use is 1 cup per bath.

 

 

  • Essential Oils – Lavender is excellent in a bath, typically 10 to 20 drops will do the trick. Consider adding other relaxing essential oils, such as: basil, bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, frankincense, juniper, marjoram, neroli, rose and rosewood, sandalwood, sage and ylang ylang. Typical use is 10 to 20 drops, but depends on the intensity of the essential oil.

 

 

  • Clays such as bentonite or monmoillonite – A powerful drawing agent, pulling toxic elements out of your body like a magnet. Clay can also do wonders on draining and circulating lymph in the body. Use 2 cups per bath as an occasional treat.

 

 Best Detox Bath

A Recipe for the Perfect Bath

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Epsom Salts
  • 1 to 2 cups Baking Soda
  • 10 to 20 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (or your preferred essential oil of choice)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup olive oil or coconut oil for dry skin (optional)

Instructions:

Begin by turning the water on, setting it for a temperature as hot as you are able to tolerate (heat dissipates quickly, so it is often better to set the bath too hot rather than too cool). Add the Epsom or bath salts, baking soda, essential oil and olive oil, making sure to stir so that the salts and baking soda dissolve completely. Fill the tub to the desired depth and dip a toe into the water. If the water is too hot, simply add some cold water to balance the temperature to your preferred setting. Submerge your body into the tub and enjoy a good soak for as long as you desire (but no shorter than 15 minutes for optimal results).

NOTE: Make sure to drink plenty of water prior to your bath and after your bath. The bath tends to draw out from the body and can be dehydrating otherwise. For bonus points, buy a filter for your shower and run the water for your bath through the filter (to filter out chlorine and other unsavory elements). If this is not an option, add 1/2 a cup of clay to your bath to help keep the exposure to a minimum.

This is a hearty and DELICIOUS fall/winter stew that is SUPER easy, even a hard charging military warrior can make it?

Those of you that know Elijah  and I personally or follow our work know we spend a lot of time working with our nations’ heroes. This stew is dedicated to one of the warriors I am privileged and honored to work with. He makes my heath journey look weak compared to the road he is on in keeping his body in optimal condition.

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • 2 handfuls of fresh cilantro leaves and stems
  • 4 rough chopped organic carrots
  • Index-finger-sized chunk of fresh ginger root, peeled
  • 2 HEAPING tablespoons creamy peanut butter (I prefer the natural kind)
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeds and pith removed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • black pepper, to taste
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into bite-sized chunks
  • 1 large sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 large red bell pepper chopped
  • 1 (15 ounces) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can organic diced tomatoes {use the juices}
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can lite coconut milk
  • 4 cups cooked brown rice to serve the stew over
  • 1 tablespoon chopped peanuts (optional garnish)

Directions:

  1. In a blender or food processor, combine garlic cloves, jalepeno, cilantro, ginger, tomatoes, peanut butter, cumin, cinnamon, ground red pepper and curry powder. Blend into a thick sauce.
  2. In the slow cooker, add the garbanzo beans, chopped onions, red bell peppers, sweet potatoes, salt, and pepper to taste. Add the sauce mixture. Stir to combine ingredients. {Or, if you are making it the night before, you can just put all the ingredients together in a ziplock bag and stick it in the fridge, then dump the whole thing in the crock pot the next morning OR FREEZE IT and use on a hectic week- MEAL PREP IS EVERYTHING PEOPLE!!!!}.
  3. Cook in crock pot on low for six to eight hours. Serve over cooked  brown rice and top with fresh cilantro and chopped peanuts and drizzle the coconut milk in. OR EAT alone with an simple green salad.

Directions

Bake the beets at 350-400 until they become tender. I simply rough chop and add some water on the bottom of a roasting pan. Let them cool. Chop them and toss lightly with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper. Place on top of seasonal salad greens of your choice { toss greens with 1/2 fresh lemon and orange}. Sprinkle with nuts or seeds. Top with sprouts {I love sunflower}

Ingredients:
3 Organic Carrots (peeled and washed)
1 Organic Beet (peeled and washed)
2 Organic Apples (washed and cut)
6 Organic Kale Leaves
½ inch of ginger root
½ organic lemon, peeled
Serving: 2-4 servings.

Directions:

If you don’t have a juicer, just use a blender filled with with one to two cups of water or FRESH coconut water. Place all of the ingredients in a juicer and juice or in a blender and blend. If you used a juicer, make sure to stir with a spoon. If you used a blender, make sure to strain everything using a colander and then mix with a spoon. You can use mason jars to store it for later.

What Ya’ Need

  • 1 cup organic split peas
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 bay leaves
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 onion, rough chop
  • 3 stalks organic celery, rough chop
  • 2 organic carrots, rough chop
  • 1 clove garlic, slice
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, buy pre sliced
  • 1 quart organic low sodium vegetable stock
  • 1 cup kale, rough chop
  • pinch Himalayan sea salt
  • pinch cayenne pepper

What Ya’ Do:

  1. In a medium sauce pan heat oil and sauté onion, garlic , carrots, celery, kale, and mushrooms over medium low until translucent, 10-15
  2. Add  split peas, water, bay leaves and paprika to a boil
  3. Reduce and simmer for about 40 minutes to 1 hour, until peas break apart
  4. Remove all from heat, discard bay leaves and place all in Vitamix
  5. Puree  on high speed, until smooth
  6. Warm and serve

Light and creamy, yummy butternut squash soup

? DELICIOUS & NUTRITIOUS ?

Simply seasoned with with Thai red curry paste and swirled with coconut milk.

? This recipe will give you about 6 cups or 48 ozs of deliciousness ?

What you need:
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 pound butternut or kabocha squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into small ½-inch pieces (about 3 cups) OR organic frozen
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, pressed or chopped
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of fresh juiced or grated ginger
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons Thai Red Curry Paste
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon himalayan sea salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon red pepper flakes (up to ¼ teaspoon for spicier soup)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 4 cups (32 ounces) organic low sodium vegetable broth
  • ½ cup full fat organic coconut milk for drizzling on top
  • ½ cup large, unsweetened coconut flakes
  • Handful fresh organic cilantro leaves, rough chop
Instructions
  1. Heat oil in a large heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Once the oil is heated, add squash, onion, garlic, curry paste, coriander, cumin, salt and red pepper flakes stir to combine.
  2. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is translucent, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add broth. Bring  to a boil, then lower heat and simmer until squash is soft, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. While the soup is cooking, toast the coconut flakes in the oven until fragrant and golden on the edges. Keep an ? on them so they don’t burn. Transfer to a bowl and let cool.
  4. Once the squash mixture is done cooking, taste and add  more Thai red curry paste if you want more of a POW?. Remove the soup from heat and let it cool slightly. Working in batches, move from pan to a blender (do not fill your blender past the maximum fill line!). Put the lid on and use a kitchen towel to protect your hand from steam escaping from the top of the blender as you purée the mixture. Blend until smooth. Transfer puréed soup to a large serving bowl or container and repeat with remaining batches.
  5. Now you can stir the lime juice into the blended soup ?. Taste and season with more salt if you want.  When you ladle the soup into individual bowls and are ready to serve, use a spoon to drizzle coconut milk over each bowl, then gently swirl the spoon through the topmost layer for a pretty design. Sprinkle the soup with toasted coconut flakes and a place the chopped fresh cilantro in the middle.

Sprouts are totally the answer for highly concentrated nutrients and phytochemicals.

“Each Sprout May Contain as Many Phytochemicals as an Entire Plant (and there are about 4000 baby plants in a package of sprouts)

Green vegetables, high in phytochemicals, prevent certain types of cancer. For instance, between 1958 and 1960, Sulforaphane was isolated in species of Brassica, Eruca, and Iberis. In 1992 Sulforaphane was identified as as a strong Phase II enzyme inducer in Broccoli.

In 1994 Steve Meyerowitz, in his book Sprout It!, points out that sulforaphane, known to prevent cancer, is inherent in Broccoli, kale, turnip, garlic, onion and Chinese cabbage.
Brassica vegetables are a principal source of antioxidant vitamins. Sprouts have advantages over mature Broccoli in that they contain higher concentrations of inducers, and the inducers mainly affect phase 2 enzyme systems. Information about the role of each nutrient and phytochemical is of critical importance.
Why do sprouts have higher concentrations of inducers? There is an inverse relationship between the age of a plant and the amount of glucosinolates per gram that it contains.

Alfalfa sprouts are one of our finest food sources of another compound, saponins. Saponins lower the bad cholesterol and fat but not the good HDL fats. Saponins also stimulate the immune system by increasing the activity of natural killer cells such as T- lymphocytes and interferon. The saponin content of Alfalfa sprouts multiplies 450% over that of the unsprouted seed.
Sprouts also contain an abundance of highly active antioxidants that prevent DNA destruction and protect us from the ongoing effects of aging. It wouldn’t be inconceivable to find a fountain of youth here, after all, sprouts represent the miracle of birth.”
