Castor Oil Health Benefits

What is Castor Oil?

  1. Castor Oil is a very pale yellow liquid that is extracted from castor seeds (Ricinus Communis).
  2. It is an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant oil which has been used for centuries for its therapeutic and medicinal benefits.
  3. It is believed that most of castor oil’s benefits are derived from its high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids.
  4. Although it has a strong and rather unpleasant taste, castor oil is used in cosmetics, soaps, textiles, medicines, massage oils and many other everyday products.

What are the Benefits of Castor Oil?

Castor Oil has been used both internally and externally for thousands of years due to its many wonderful health benefits. Since it can strengthen the immune system, castor oil is considered a great remedy for the following major illnesses and ailments:

Uses of Castor Oil

Castor Oil

Arthritis Natural Remedy

The anti-inflammatory properties of Castor Oil make it an excellent massage oil for relieving arthritic joints, nerve inflammations, and sore muscles.

  1. Make a small pad by folding a small piece of unbleached cotton flannelette into 3 or 4 layers.
  2. Dip the cotton pad into Castor Oil and place it on to the affected joint or muscle.
  3. Cover the pad with a plastic wrap.
  4. Place a hot water bottle or heating pad over the plastic wrapped cotton pad. The plastic wrap will prevent the water bottle or heating pad from getting oily.
  5. Leave the cotton pad on for 45 minutes to an hour, once per day.
  6. This Castor Oil pack can be reused. Simply place it into a plastic ziplock bag and refrigerate it until it is ready to be used again. It can be refrigerated in a ziplock bag.

Constipation Remedy

Studies have shown that Castor Oil is a very strong laxative, which makes it very effective against constipation. Therefore, simply take a teaspoon of castor oil in the morning. You can mix the oil with orange juice, cranberry juice, prune juice, or ginger juice to take away from the bitter taste without affecting the laxative effects. However, do not take it continuously for more than 3 days. If symptoms persist for longer than 3 days, consult your physician immediately.

Ringworm Treatment

Ringworm is known to be a stubborn condition to treat, but one of the active compounds of Castor Oil (Undecylenic Acid) has been found to be very effective at treating this fungal infection.

  1. Spray Castor leaves with some hot water and coarsely crush the leaves. Soak the leaves in pure coconut oil.
  2. Warm the leaves to a temperature that will not burn the skin, and apply the leaves over the affected area as a poultice.
  3. Leave on the skin for at least one hour, or optionally overnight.
  4. You may wrap the leaves with unbleached cotton fabric to prevent the oil from staining your bed sheets.
  5. Repeat the procedure every night before going to bed until cured. However, if you notice any redness or discomfort around the area, discontinue this remedy.

Skin Problems

Successful studies have approved the use of Castor Oil for skin infections and other skin problems such as sunburn, abrasions, acne, dry skin, boils, warts, stretch marks, liver/age spots, athletes foot and chronic itching and inflamed skin.

  1. Dip a cotton ball into Castor oil and apply it onto the affected skin in the morning and at night.
  2. Alternatively, for larger skin areas, soak an appropriately large piece of unbleached cotton cloth in Castor Oil and wrap the affected area overnight.
  3. If the area is very small, soak a Band-Aid in Castor Oil and cover the infected skin overnight.
  4. For stubborn fungal infections that affect the skin or nails, it is recommended to soak the affected skin in Epsom Salt for 10-15 minutes to soften and disinfect the skin before applying Castor Oil. This can help speed up the healing process.

Stye Treatment

The anti-bacterial components of castor oil have been found to be effective against styes (oil gland infections on the eyelid). Simply apply a very small drop of the oil directly onto the stye 2 or 3 times per day.

Wrinkle Treatment

Castor oil is a natural emollient that penetrates the skin and helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin which can soften and hydrate the skin. Therefore, it is a wonderful natural treatment for wrinkles since it restores and rejuvenates skin’s natural youthful appearance by making skin smoother, softer and pliant. Dip a small cotton ball into the oil and apply it on wrinkled skin before going to bed. Use only a small amount of oil when applying it to the skin near the eyes.

What are the Side Effects of Castor Oil?

Castor oil is normally safe if used in moderation. However, pregnant and lactating women and people with intestinal blockage, acute inflammatory intestinal disease, appendicitis, or abdominal pain should not take Castor Oil without their doctor’s approval.

Note that precautions must be taken when taking the oil internally, so you should always follow the directions on the package and consult your doctor or naturopathic professional before consuming it. A typical recommended dosage for the oil is no more than one-half to one full teaspoon per day. Overdosage of Castor Oil may result in diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or cramping.

Where and How to Buy Castor Oil

Castor Oil is best purchased from a health food store, since the oil that can be found in a supermarket may be meant for industrial use only {which is not safe for human consumption}. Look for cold-pressed or cold-processed oil only and confirm it with a naturopathic doctor before taking it. The color of the oil should be a very light or pale yellow.

Why You Need to Eat the Right Foods for Your Body…

The Down and Dirty on Clean Eating

 It seems like everywhere you turn, someone is talking about clean eating. So what is all the hoopla about and what does “clean eating” actually mean anyways?

No, it doesn’t mean you are eating food that has been run through the washing machine, although it is a good idea to use a veggie wash on all of your produce before you eat it. Clean eating is all about being aware of the pathway your food had to go through from growth, to your plate. It is focused on the consumption of whole or real food and the reduction or elimination of processed, refined, or handled food from your diet.

Clean eating may sound easy to do, but with the convenience of fast food, and modern grocery stores offering so many processed options and unhealthy foods that do not require any preparation, there is temptation at every turn. So WHY is eating clean worth the hassle? Is it really worth the extra money and sometimes the extra preparation time? In one word – YES, and it can actually be quite simple to do too!

By eating raw, organic fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and good fats, the benefits go far beyond just weight loss. Eating clean promotes natural detoxification in the body and supports liver function. Simply put, the less “junk” clogging up your system, the less your body and specifically your liver has to work to eliminate waste and toxins in your body.

When you eat clean, you substantially improve how well your systems function. This translates into more energy and improved cognitive abilities, immune system functioning, mental state, skin, and hair. Who doesn’t want better skin and hair? When you clean up your insides, your outsides are sure to glow! Doesn’t that sound amazing?

If the benefits of eating clean don’t entice you, the downside of NOT eating clean will at least make you rethink your diet. The implications and problems associated with eating processed and unnatural foods are enormous.

Processed foods are loaded with genetically modified organisms (GMOs). GMOs have been linked to several major health issues such as cancer, diabetes, and infertility to name a few. Processed foods are also full of chemicals that are void of nutrients, and are often stripped of good vitamins and minerals our bodies need to function properly and help us perform and be at our very best.

So, are you ready to reset your health with clean eating? I know I was after I heard about the consequences of not eating clean! I was so tired of feeling sick and tired, I knew I had to jump off the hamster wheel and get REAL with my food (pun intended).

Clean eating also includes drinking more water and increasing fruit and veggie intake. Raw and organic produce are the best options to avoid those nasty pesticides that increase toxicity in the body when consumed.  Filling up on fruits and veggies also keeps you full so you will be less likely to binge on unhealthy foods.

Almost every top massage and spa place I have been to serves fruit, herb, and flower-infused water. Can’t wait to get started? Try this delicious and refreshing recipe! It’s one of my favorites!

Detox Watermelon Recipe

32 ounces of water 4 cubes fresh watermelon 6 leaves cilantro (cilantro helps with detoxification)

In a 1-liter pitcher, place the fruit and cilantro at the bottom and add water until full. Cover the top of the pitcher and let sit in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to let the fruit seep into the water. The mixture should keep for two days.

The following are some other combination recommendations:

– Orange, lemon, and ginger (improves immune system and blood circulation) – Cucumber, raspberry, and grape (beats inflammation and fights cancer)

– Rhubarb, apple, and cinnamon (amplifies metabolism) – Strawberry and lime (boosts anti-aging) – Pineapple and mint (relieves joint pain and supports digestive system)

How to avoid a fast food joint when

on the go and hungry

I get asked this question ALL THE TIME! With teenage twins, a fast a paced business and a boat load of travel, I figured out, there is always a solution. Keep it simple works every time and be prepared!!!

This weekend we drove up to Quantico for the Warrior Games. Elijah and I are coaches for a Marine Wounded Warrior that qualified, so we packed up the kids, and the coolers… In our cooler for the 4hr ride and 2 day trip in a hotel room were:

Sliced Watermelon, Grapes, Bing Cherries, Sliced Cucumbers, Carrots, Cherry Tomatoes, Guacamole, Blue Corn Chips/ Salsa, Hard Boiled Eggs, Bananas, green juice, smoothies and Herbal Heal All Tea. Everyone was satisfied, energized and taken care of! We went out to dinner once and then had light lunch at the games on Sunday. We had plenty of nutrient density left over in our cooler for the ride home too…

Well, I am sure at one time or another we have all found ourselves on the drive thru line, starving, and craving some food that will provide a solution to that crazy grumbling sound in our bellies. So, we go for something quick and fast. It also doesn’t help that each town has at least one to two or even more fast food joints to offer some quick yet unhealthy options for us. How do we avoid this? How can we avoid being that hungry, craving, cranky, and in a need of a fast fix person who has lost all control for healthy determination? Well, it is much simpler than you’d think.

The real fast food, before corporations built these multi-million dollar unhealthy options for us, was good old-fashioned fruits and veggies. Imagine that! Fruits and veggies should always be the number one option, and they are sold everywhere we turn as well, although they don’t usually have a drive thru. So, if it is about convenience then we need to prepare ahead of time. If we pack snacks and quick foods to go in our purse or brief case then we will always have a fast food option that aligns with having a healthy determination.

I suggest packing apples, bananas, oranges, and even some healthy homemade trail mix! My kids love Trail mix and they give it 2 thumbs up as a  favorite go-to snack when we are on the go. I put some seeds, raisins, cacao nibs and dried fruit like cranberries in a little Ziploc back or plastic Tupperware container. It is always there and it doesn’t fail us. It also quick to prepare and if I make a bunch of it I can take little servings for a couple days so it lasts.

Super easy, super delicious and it keeps us out of the danger zone…

I ALWAYS ALSO have a stash of my favorite raw dark chocolate tucked away…

 

The best way to avoid fast food joints while on the go is to always make sure you have a fast food option in your purse.

One Minute Meditation

One Minute Meditation

In this day and age, we are surrounded by the hustle and bustle of a fast-paced work world and technology. No matter how hard we try, the stress just seems to creep in from trying to keep up with everything.

If you’re the kind of person who’s got a little more stress than you’d like (and, honestly, who doesn’t feel that way, sometimes?), you’ve gotta try this one-minute meditation.

This quick meditation will help you to center yourself and find some inner peace amidst the chaos of everyday life. Not only that, but it will help you to reduce inflammation in the body and decrease the toxic load on your organs.

To do the one-minute meditation, breathe in slowly for 15 seconds, then exhale slowly for 15 seconds. Then repeat.

That’s it. It’s really that simple.

If you’d like to change it up, you can breathe in one nostril and exhale out the other, switching the nostrils for inhalation and exhalation on the second round. You could also play around with how long you breathe in for and how long you breathe out for. The longer the inhalation, the more energy you will have. The longer the exhalation, the more relaxed you will feel.

Why diets don’t work

 

Talking from experience, I cannot tell you how many diets, and how much money I have spent on pills and programs to lose weight, just to gain it right back on afterward. Time and time again, I was promised this ‘new me’, only to be let down shortly after the diet or program was over. Every time I gained more than I had lost, it left me self-conscious, disappointed, and feeling like a failure. The truth of the matter is: DIETS DON’T WORK!

 

Sure, sometimes you lose the weight (at a cost to you financially, your health, and your body) for a short period of time, but diets cannot give you long-term sustainable weight or fat loss. When going through these drastic changes of dieting, your body goes into shutdown mode and your brain releases hormones telling your brain that you are starving. So when the diet is done, your body wants to replenish what it lost, plus some.

 

When you diet, you are consuming less food, so your metabolism slows down and you also lose muscle in the process. In no circumstance, in a healthy body, would you want to lose muscle mass! Instead we need to focus on what is being put into our bodies, and not how much of it.

 

There is a stigma against people who diet and then gain the weight right back, like they, the individual, are the reason they gained the weight back due to lack of will power, strength, laziness, ignorance… this puts too much power in weight being a choice or a product of not trying hard enough to be what everyone wants you to be. I read a great quote from an article in TheAtlantic.com that said, “Nutrition and fitness should be directed towards a healthy and improved lifestyle- NOT appearance (that is just a benefit).” And it’s true!

 

First off, clean eating is not a diet, it is a lifestyle choice. It is making the conscious decision to be happier and healthier, not only for you, but for your family. Clean eating is all about being aware of the pathway your food had to go through from growth, to your plate. It is focusing on consuming whole or real food and reducing or eliminating processed, refined, or handled food from your diet.

 

Focusing on raw, organic fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and good fats, the benefits go far beyond just weight loss. You gain more energy, improved body system functioning, improved cognitive abilities, better skin, better hair… the list goes on! Some general tips to remember when eating clean include:

  • Limit processed foods
  • Increase fruit and veggie intake (raw and organic are the best options)
  • Cut down saturated fat
  • Reduce or eliminate alcohol and tobacco consumption
  • Remove sugars or artificial sweeteners
  • Eat lean meats
  • Cut out refined grains
  • Hydrate – not with sugary sports drinks but with water. If you don’t like water try adding lemon or raspberries for a hint of flavor.

 

Now food is only one part of the weight loss equation. To lose weight and reach optimal health and wellness, you should exercise regularly, practice stress management, sleep proper amounts, hydrate, and focus on your daily nutrients. Clean eating will help you and your family feel better, long-term. And when you feel better, it shows!
